HSL and Shellac Coating Machine with Online Wet Lamination

Integrated Foil Coating and Wet Lamination for Pharmaceutical and Packaging Applications

Our HSL and Shellac Coating Machine with Online Wet Lamination uses a controlled application of lacquer or protective wash and continuous paper and foil wet lamination. It is intended for converters manufacturing aluminium foil with coatings, pharmaceutical packaging materials and protective foil-paper constructions.

The integration enables HSL, shellac or comparable specialty coatings to be applied under regulated circumstances, while the online lamination portion bonds the needed substrates. This reduces separate material handling and supports consistent coating, drying, alignment and laminate formation.

Engineered for Controlled HSL and Shellac Application

HSL and shellac coatings perform different functions and require carefully controlled processing. Heat seal lacquer provides the sealing layer required to bond packaging foil with a compatible substrate, while shellac-based or other protective wash coatings may be used to protect the foil surface and support subsequent printing or converting requirements.

An inconsistent coating layer can cause weak sealing, excessive chemical consumption, blocking, visible coating marks or variation across the roll. The coating section therefore uses an accurately engraved gravure arrangement to transfer a measured quantity of coating material onto the web.

Controlled web tension keeps lightweight foil stable during application. The coated material then passes through a multi-zone drying chamber, where airflow and temperature are adjusted according to the chemical system, coating weight, substrate thickness and required production speed.

Designed to Online Foil and Paper Wet Lamination

The on-line wet lamination section allows a suitable aluminium foil to be bonded to paper or other compatible substrate in the same production sequence. The adhesive is applied evenly before the two materials are brought together at the lamination nip.

Due to the absorbent substrate of the paper, moisture of the adhesive may penetrate in the wet lamination process. Correct adhesive application and nip pressure contribute to a flat, well-bonded laminate that is free from excessive curling, bubbles or dry patches.

Integrating coating and lamination reduces intermediate rewinding, roll storage and repeated material loading. The final laminate is rewound under regulated tension and can be prepared for printing, slitting, packing or additional processing.

Why Coated Foil Requires the Right Manufacturing Process

Pharmaceutical and speciality foil packaging depends on consistent coating performance. If HSL coating is too light, the foil may not seal properly. Excessive coating can increase consumption, extend drying time and create blocking during roll storage.

Shellac and protective wash coatings must also be applied evenly. Missing areas, pinholes or incorrect drying may affect surface protection and print performance. When wet lamination is included, adhesive coat weight, paper absorbency and bonding pressure must be coordinated with the coating process.

The HSL and Shellac Coating Machine with Online Wet Lamination brings these critical operations into one controlled production flow. It helps manufacturers maintain uniform coating, proper drying, accurate material alignment and reliable laminate quality from one batch to the next.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the coating and lamination units operate independently?

An independent operating option can be provided according to the finalized machine design, allowing greater production flexibility.

How is coating weight controlled?

Coating weight is managed through the gravure-cylinder specification, coating viscosity, doctor-blade setting, web speed and process parameters.

Can VMCH coating also be applied?

Yes, the machine can be configured for VMCH or other compatible speciality coating systems, subject to chemical and end-use requirements.

Is the machine suitable for pharmaceutical blister foil?

It can be configured for compatible blister-foil coating applications. The lacquer, foil specification and process conditions must meet the buyer’s required packaging standards.

Which materials can the machine process?

The machine can be configured for compatible aluminium foil, paper and selected pharmaceutical or speciality packaging substrates.

What is online wet lamination?

Online wet lamination bonds foil with an absorbent material, commonly paper, during the same production process instead of laminating it later on a separate machine.

Can HSL and shellac be applied on the same machine?

Yes. A suitably configured gravure coating system can process different compatible coating formulations. Proper cleaning is required when changing chemicals.

What is the purpose of shellac coating?

Shellac or a compatible protective wash may be applied to protect the foil surface and support printing or subsequent converting. Its suitability depends on the final packaging application.

What does HSL mean?

HSL stands for Heat Seal Lacquer. It is a functional coating that allows aluminium foil to seal with a compatible packaging substrate when heat and pressure are applied.

What is an HSL and Shellac Coating Machine with Online Wet Lamination?

It is an integrated roll-to-roll system that applies HSL, shellac or another compatible speciality coating and performs wet lamination of suitable foil and paper substrates.
