Rotogravure Printing Machine with Turret Unwind and Rewind System

Non-Stop Roll Changing for High-Volume Flexible Packaging Printing

Mohindra Mechanical Works manufactures the Rotogravure Printing Machine with Turret Unwind and Rewind System for packaging converters looking for faster roll changes, less machine stoppage and consistent production.
The double-position turret permits the preparation of the next material roll and rewinding core while the active roll is in operation. Depending on the automation selected the machine can be equipped with automatic roll-change, auto-splicing or flying-splice system to provide continuous roll-to-roll printing.

Built for Continuous Flexible Packaging Production

A major source of lost production time in conventional rotogravure printing is roll changing. Usually the machine has to slow down or stop for material replacement when the rewind roll reaches its specified diameter or the unwind roll is finished.

Our Turret Rotogravure Printing Machine overcomes this difficulty by providing two roll-holding positions at both the unwinding and rewinding portions. One position can still be active while operators set up the next roll or core at the alternate position.

A appropriate automatic splicing design enables changeover without the need to stop the entire printing process. This makes the machine particularly suitable for large-volume packaging orders, repetitive projects and prolonged production schedules.

How the Turret Rotogravure Printing Machine Works

  • The first material roll is loaded at the active position of the turret unwinder.
  • A replacement roll is prepared at the second unwind position while printing continues.
  • Automatic tension and web-guiding systems feed the substrate into the printing section.
  • Engraved cylinders transfer each colour onto the moving substrate.
  • The printed web passes through the drying section after every printing station.
  • The finished material is collected on the active turret rewind shaft.
  • When the active unwind roll is nearly finished, the web is transferred to the prepared replacement roll.
  • When the finished rewind roll reaches the selected diameter, winding shifts to the fresh core.

Automatic Turret Unwind System

The turret unwinder holds an active material roll and a standby roll. The replacement roll can be loaded and prepared while printing continues from the running roll.

As the active roll approaches completion, the system initiates the changeover according to the selected manual, semi-automatic or automatic operating mode. An optional splicing arrangement joins the new material web to the running web.

The turret unwinder supports:

A shaftless roll-holding arrangement can also be provided according to roll diameter, core size and material-handling requirements

Turret Rewind System

The turret rewinder winds up the substrate that has been printed and dried in the form of a roll. While one rewinding station is active, a new core is being set at the other station. Once the roll reaches the desired diameter, the web is switched over to the new core based on the chosen changeover method.

The wound-up roll can now be removed without stopping the active station. In this way, it becomes easier to handle the finished roll and avoids downtime associated with roll removal and setting of a new core.

Automatic Splicing and Flying Splice Options

For operations requiring uninterrupted production, the machine can be supplied with an automatic splicing system. This system prepares the replacement roll and joins it to the running material during changeover.

A flying splice system can be considered for applications requiring roll replacement while the web remains in motion. The exact splicing method is selected according to substrate behaviour, web width, operating speed, roll diameter and production requirement.

Automatic splicing can help manufacturers achieve:

Splicing performance and operating speed depend on the selected substrate and final machine configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the machine print multiple colours?

Yes. The Multi-Colour Turret Rotogravure Printing Machine can be configured with the required number of printing stations.

Which films can be printed?

The machine can be configured for BOPP, PET, CPP, PVC, LDPE, metallized film and suitable flexible packaging substrates.

Is a shaftless turret configuration available?

Yes. A shaftless roll-holding configuration can be considered according to roll weight, diameter, core size and handling requirements.

Can both unwind and rewind sections have turret systems?

Yes. The machine can be supplied as a Double Turret Rotogravure Printing Machine with turret systems at both the unwinding and rewinding sections.

Is this a non-stop rotogravure printing machine?

With the required turret, automatic splicing and web-transfer configuration, the machine can support non-stop or near-continuous roll-to-roll production. Actual changeover performance depends on operating conditions.

Is a flying splice system available?

A flying splice system can be provided for suitable substrates and production requirements. Its feasibility depends on the material, speed, roll dimensions and selected machine design.

What is an automatic splicing system?

Is a flying splice system available? An automatic splicing system connects the replacement material roll to the running web during roll changeover. It reduces manual web joining and production interruption.

Can the machine change rolls automatically?

Yes. An automatic roll-change system can be provided according to the selected machine configuration and automation level.

What is the main advantage of a turret unwind and rewind system?

Its main advantage is faster roll changeover. The alternate roll positions reduce machine stoppage and improve production efficiency during long printing runs.

What is a Turret Rotogravure Printing Machine?

A Turret Rotogravure Printing Machine uses multiple roll-holding positions at the unwind and rewind sections. It allows standby rolls and fresh winding cores to be prepared while the active roll remains in production.
