Water-Activated Vinyl Paper Coating Machine

Controlled remoistenable adhesive coating for clean storage and reliable bonding after water activation.

The Water-Activated Vinyl Paper Coating Machine applies a uniform coating of moisture activated adhesive to the back of suitable vinyl paper. The coated surface is dry for storage but is tacked up as required by wetting before to use.

Engineered for Reliable Water-Activated Adhesive Coating on Vinyl Paper

Water-activated adhesive products require a coating that has a different behavior in two different stages. It should remain dry and non sticky throughout re-winding, printing, cutting and storage, but generate sufficient tack on application of water by the user.

The Water Activated Vinyl Paper Coating Machine is designed to apply a controlled coating of reactivatable adhesive to suitable vinyl paper and paper based substrates. It provides accurate adhesive metering and controlled drying to prepare the material for later printing, slitting, sheeting and product conversion.

Unlike pressure-sensitive products, the completed surface does not require a release liner when the specified adhesive remains inactive under dry conditions. This can simplify the finished material structure for applicable applications.

Uniform Adhesive Application Across the Web

Uneven coating may cause spots that activate differentially. A thinly coated area may not bond, while too much glue can prolong drying time, cause blockage, or leave a visible residue after application.

The coating system meters the remoistenable adhesive throughout the working breadth and supports a constant deposit during continuous operation. The machine can utilize gravure, reverse roll, Mayer bar or other suitable application arrangement according on the formulation, substrate and desired coat weight.

The appropriate coating head is selected based on adhesive viscosity, solids content and finishing performance required.

Drying Without Losing Reactivation Performance

The roll of paper is inserted in the unwinding station, which passes through the machine under controlled tension. UV coating is done uniformly using the configured coating system. The coated paper is then taken through the UV curing station before it is rewound to form the final roll.

Some of the advantages that the above process ensures include:

Production settings should be confirmed through material trials rather than relying only on machine temperature.

Managing Blocking During Rewinding

Blocking is defined as the adhesion of the coated side to the adjacent surface of the roll. This can harm the coating, make the roll difficult to unwind and produce rejection while converting.

Common causes include:

★ Incomplete drying
★ Excessive coating deposit
★ High rewinding pressure
★ Hot web entering the rewinder
★ Unsuitable adhesive formulation
★ High storage humidity
★ Incompatible contact surfaces

The machine may contain a proper cooling path and controlled rewinding system to help stabilize the coated web prior to roll production.

Water-Activated Adhesive vs Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive

These two adhesive systems should not be treated as the same product.

Water-Activated Adhesive

Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive

Remains non-tacky when dry

Remains permanently tacky

Requires water for activation

Bonds through contact and pressure

May not require release liner in suitable constructions

Usually requires release liner or release-treated backing

Adhesive must be dried before rewinding

Adhesive tack must be protected

Suitable for remoistenable products

Suitable for conventional stickers and tapes

The machine configuration must be selected according to the adhesive chemistry actually being processed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this machine suitable for self-adhesive vinyl?

Conventional self-adhesive vinyl uses permanently tacky pressure-sensitive adhesive and normally requires a release liner. That process requires a different machine configuration.

Can printing be done after adhesive coating?

Yes, if the face side remains printable and the coated roll is properly stabilised. The intended printing process should be tested beforehand.

Can the machine coat ordinary paper?

Yes, it can be configured for suitable paper substrates, provided the adhesive, absorbency and final product requirements are evaluated.

What causes coated rolls to stick together?

Incomplete drying, excessive adhesive, high winding pressure, insufficient cooling or high humidity may cause blocking.

Can the coating weight be adjusted?

Yes. The applied deposit can be regulated within the operating range of the selected coating system.

Which adhesives can be used?

Compatible starch-based, dextrin-based, synthetic or blended remoistenable adhesives may be considered. Machine suitability must be checked against the actual formulation.

Is a release liner required?

A release liner may not be required for certain properly dried remoistenable products. The final construction depends on the adhesive and contact surface inside the roll.

Does the finished material remain sticky?

No. With a suitable formulation and proper drying, the coating remains dry and non-tacky until it is moistened.

What is a Water-Activated Vinyl Paper Coating Machine?

It applies a remoistenable adhesive to compatible vinyl paper. The adhesive is dried during manufacturing and becomes tacky again when water is applied.
